What You’ll Need:
- Montessori Cards and Counters (or download our FREE DIY version)
Set-Up:
- Lay out the number cards (1-10) in order on a work mat or table.
- Have the counters in a small basket or container nearby.
How to Play:
- Ask your child to place the correct number of counters below each card. For example, place one counter under the “1” card, two under the “2” card, and so on.
- Once all the counters are placed, encourage your child to count them out loud for extra practice.
Extension Ideas:
- Sorting Even and Odd: After placing the counters, show your child how to check if a number is even or odd by pairing the counters. If each counter has a pair, it’s even; if one counter is left over, it’s odd. Invite them to sort the numbers into two groups: even and odd. This is another form of counting games that kids can engage with.
- Skip Counting: Transform this into an exciting counting game for kids by introducing skip counting! After laying out the numbers and counters, ask your child to remove the counters from all odd-numbered cards. Then, count the remaining counters together by 2s. This introduces early math concepts like skip counting in a playful way.
Why This Activity Works:
Using number cards and counters in these counting games for kids helps reinforce basic counting skills, number recognition, and fine motor development. Adding a twist with sorting and skip counting engages children even more, making learning fun and interactive. It’s a great introduction to concepts like even and odd numbers, and sets the foundation for future math skills.
